Neon Models

Hi I wanted to let you know that I finally got a reply from the agency. They said they had been busy with all the christmas promotions and work and hadn't had a chance to review any applications yet. I guess that makes sense! I was starting to get worried but I'm super excited now that they accepted me. It's really thanks to Neon Models that I got in, as you know I had no idea what to do before speaking to you! They said I'm on a list of potentials for a big job in February so I'm really really hoping I get it. I don't know what its for but they asked if I had a passport so thats good isnt it! Hope you have a great christmas anyway and thanks again. Take care, Ryan

Hi again, quick note, firstly while I remember please give me a call about what I should do to update my portfolio because some of the shots are a couple of years old now. Secondly, thanks for putting me in touch with Rebecca, last week's job was loads of fun! Kisses, Gemma

Neon Models Review by Sarah

Sarah's Story: Neon Models Review

Neon Models are a fashion photography studio in central London specialising in modelling portfolio photo shoots. Neon Models is also a website full of modelling resources, tips, tricks and news. From catwalk to catalogue, Neon have it all.

Sarah recently wrote to Neon Models regarding her portfolio modelling shoot. Here is what she had to say.

Neon Models 2014
"Hi all! I'll be honest, when I registered on the Neon Models website I really wasn't expecting much. I had never 'modelled' as such before and was really keen to try it for a bit of fun. Soon after you called me I was very glad to find out that I didn't live too far from the studio and could easily get into town. I have to thank you for the day and for filling me with confidence. The prices were higher than I'd thought they'd be but after looking elsewhere I now realise that it's the going rate for photos this good and I'm glad I didn't shop around. I've had responses from two agencies, and I only applied to three so that's good. Hoping to get some work with all the Christmas hype going on! Tc & I'll let you know how I get on!"

There is demand for a wide range of younger female models in the modelling industry, from gaunt catwalk models to sexy curves for catalogue lingerie, to fresh young faces for teen magazines, to girl-next-door looks for catalogue products.

To become a top model, you have to stand out from the rest, ensuring you are as confident as the models you aspire to be - when you have the right attitude, you are well on your way to becoming a model. In modelling especially, starting younger is a good idea, and gives you time to hone your craft and develop your talent. Also, there is no requirement to fit the mould or have a certain look, indeed new types of modelling, including plus size modelling has increased in demand in recent years.

Is Neon Models good? Your questions answered.

"Hi Neon Models,

I just wanted to say thank you. After attempting to ring ever since I left the test shoot, only to be met by voicemail( it may seem strange, but I dislike leaving voicemail messages) I decided to email you instead. I feel so lucky for you to have had so much confidence and faith in me, and I probably would never pursued a career in modelling if it weren’t for you. I thought you might like to see some of the photos from the shoot, since you so enthusiastic, so I’m leaving you the link to my web folio. I just wanted to say a big thank you, I am very grateful to you for all your help.

Jennifer Lynch"

Modelling Agency Contracts

A contract with a modelling agency seems like the holy grail for aspiring models, but unfortunately, too many models rush in too eagerly, and only find out what they’ve agreed to later.

Pressure to Sign a Modelling Agency Contract

Modelling Agency contracts are often very long and filled with legalise, and can be very daunting for anyone
who’s not a lawyer, let alone someone who may be very young and inexperienced with contracts.
The contract will often be presented as a ‘take it or leave it’ offer, and the modelling agency may even pressure the model to sign it on the spot, saying that the offer will be off the table if the model doesn’t make up her or his mind right away.
But a new model should resist this pressure. If possible, take the contract away and genuinely try to read it, not matter how difficult it may seem. It may even be worth paying for the services of a lawyer to check it over. And, if there are any clauses that the model isn’t happy with, she can ask for the contract to be amended.

What will the Modelling Agency Offer

A modelling agency contract will never guarantee you work, and in most cases, it will be heavily biased in favour of the agency, offering you very little. This is normal and is simply there to legally cover the modelling agency. After all, they can’t guarantee you work, as you must complete with other models and it’s the clients who make the final decision. It’s in the modelling agency’s interests to promise very little and then overdeliver. Otherwise, if they have any written commitments to get work for models, if it’s not possible, the model will come complaining to them. This doesn’t mean that the modelling agency isn’t going to try their hardest to find work for you, just that it can’t be guaranteed.

Exclusive Vs Non Exclusive Modelling Contracts

Contracts should be very clear about what level of exclusivity is required. The modelling agency may only require the model to be exclusive within a particular region or country, or it may be worldwide. The larger the modelling agency and the more time and effort they are intending to invest in launching the model’s career, the more likely they are to have high exclusivity requirements.

Length of Modelling Contracts

Modelling contracts can range from one year to five years and they may be fixed, or it may be possible to cancel them from either side before the time period is up. Whether it’s good to have a long or short contract depends on the relationship between the modelling agency and model, and how hard each are working for the other.

Neon Models Modelling Interview Tips

So, you submitted your photos to a modelling agency and they’ve invited you in for an interview. Congratulations! You’re already further than the majority of aspiring models. This article gives tips and advice on how to give yourself the best chance of shining in the interview and impressing the agent into wanting to sign you up.

Note – if a modelling agency has signed you up without meeting you in person, they are almost certainly not a genuine modelling agency.

How to look

The objective is to show how versatile you can be as a model, and that means being a blank canvas, so the keyword here is subtlety. Wear something simple, smart and comfortable. Simple means that your personality won’t be too in their face; smart will demonstrate that you’re mature and are taking the process seriously in a professional manner; and comfortable means that you won’t be fidgeting or struggling because of your dandy but impractical outfit.
Avoid brand names and don’t overdo it on make-up. They will want to see what you look like naturally, and if you pile on the cosmetics they will probably ask you to wash it all off. Better to go with a light foundation, clear lip gloss and maybe a touch of eyeliner or mascara.

How to behave

Try to stay calm, be yourself and be professional. It’s natural to be nervous and the agents will be used to that. Make sure you listen carefully to what they ask and answer truthfully – don’t try to just tell them what you think they want to hear. They’ve done this hundreds of times and will be able to spot it a mile off. And even if you could fool them, it would only come back to bite you in the bum later. Nervousness often makes people babble. If you find yourself doing this then pause, take a few deep breaths and try to bring whatever you’re saying to a neat conclusion.

Anything else?

Prepare yourself early, give yourself extra travel time and make sure you arrive at least ten minutes early. There’s nothing more stressful than arriving late and rushing in all hot and bothered and flustered. Bring something to read in case they keep you waiting, a bottle of water and whatever basic make-up you need to freshen up. And don’t forget to smile!

If you want a helping hand as you launch your modelling career, then register on the Neon Models website.

Case Study of A Supermodel – Kate Moss, by Neon Models

Kate Moss is arguably the most famous supermodel in the world. She rose to fame during the Heroin Chic model movement in the 1990s and despite waves of controversy over the years, remains one of the most highly demanded models to this day.

Kate grew up in an unassuming family in Surrey, but was spotted at an airport when she was only 14 years old by the founder of Storm Model Management. Following a black and whiter ‘grunge’ photoshoot when she was sixteen, Kate went on to become famous for her contrast to the supermodels of the time, who tended to healthy, tall and curvaceous.

She has won many awards over the years, including ranking highly in several ‘Sexiest Women’ lists, modern muses and rich lists.

Kate Moss has worked with many of the leading international fashion  brands, including Calvin Klein, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Rimmel and Bulgari. She has been on the cover of countless magazines, including Vogue, Vanity Fair and the Face.

Kate has branched out from modelling and has been a fashion icon for the boho-chich movement and has even designed her own collection. She has also launched fragrances and body lotions bearing her name.

Kate’s personal life has been a focus for controversy and media interest, with partners ranging from Johnny Depp to the infamous Pete Doherty. She’s now married to Jamie Hince, the guitarist for The Kills. Her drug use has often been in the headlines, and while a cocaine scandal temporarily caused negative publicity, it doesn’t appear to have affected her earning power, which is higher than ever.
